Out of the Blue

Project Statement

Beneath blue waves, life flocks to and fro. From the depths of its trenches to the swirls of its foam, the oceans seed imaginations, they bring us sustenance; they hold our planet in balance to sustain life.

My 50/50 journey started by studying images of the flora and fauna found along the pacific rim. While searching for subjects, I kept returning to images of coral and aquatic microorganisms. Sea plants and invertebrates inspired me to create a series of paintings, exploring textures, colors, and the beginnings of life on our planet. Using multiple types of acrylic paints and polymer mediums, I used the wood panels to express various stages of life blooming out of the sea: From archaic chaos -before life, when the oceans bubbled from volcanic unrest; to the surge of enzymes, sugars and proteins, which later formed the first inklings of life.

The installation was created for a group exhibition at the Sanchez Art Center, 50/50 (fifty artworks in fifty days). A fundraiser to benefit the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica, CA.
